Banana split
A Banana Split is a classic dessert dish that has been enjoyed for over a century. It consists of a whole banana, split in half lengthwise, that is topped with scoops of ice cream, syrup, whipped cream, and various toppings such as chopped nuts, sprinkles, and cherries. The dish is typically served in a long dish called a “boat”.
The origin of the Banana Split is credited to a pharmacist in Latrobe, Pennsylvania named David Strickler. In 1904, Strickler created the dessert as a way to attract customers to his soda fountain. The dish quickly became popular, and soon other soda fountains across the country were offering their own versions of the Banana Split.
The traditional Banana Split is made with three scoops of ice cream, each in a different flavor. The most common flavors used are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, but other flavors such as mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and rocky road are also popular. The banana is then topped with a drizzle of syrup, such as chocolate, caramel, or strawberry, and a dollop of whipped cream. The dish is finished with a sprinkle of chopped nuts and a cherry on top.
