Loco Moco Recipe

Loco Moco incredible Hawaiian comfort food classic is made by topping rice with a fried burger, then smothering it in a deep brown sauce, and finishing it off with a fried egg. Seriously, how did this combo not occur to someone until 1949? We’ve all been there, so whether you’re a broke student or an older professional who wishes they were, this cheap, filling bowl of goodness is the perfect solution. Serve with green onions as a garnish.

Loco Moco supposes a simple dish made using basic ingredients. It starts with a bed of sticky white rice, then a hamburger patty, brown gravy, and a sunny-side-up egg are added.

In the 1940s, a group of boys sitting at the Lincoln Grill in Hilo, Hawaii, begged the waitress to prepare a dinner that they could afford. Rice, beef, and gravy was the notion they came up with, and the rest is history.

Ingredients For Loco Moco

  • 2 (4 ounce) patties ground beef

  • cayenne pepper(red chili ) 1 pinch

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 drops sesame oil(till oil), or to taste
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 1 ½ cups beef stock(yakhni)
  • 2 tsp white sugar (Optional)
  • 4 tsp cornstarch(cornflour)
  • 2 tsp unsalted butter, divided
  • 4 tsp soy sauce
  • white rice 2 cups hot cooked
  • 2 tbsp minced green onions, white and light green parts only

Directions

  • Season patties with salt, pepper, and cayenne(red chili).
  • Whisk beef stock(yakhni), soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, sesame oil(till oil), ketchup, sugar, and cornstarch(cornflour) together in a bowl.
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patty in the hot skillet until a browned crust forms on the bottom, about 5 minutes. Flip; toss in green onions and cook the other side until both beef and onions are brown, 4 to 5 minutes more. Remove patty and most of the green onions to a plate.
  • Pour beef stock(yakhni) mixture into the skillet. Stir, scraping up browned bits from the bottom, until thickened, about 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low and reserve gravy until needed.
