December 2022 events calendar, The holidays are almost here for real. And they’ve taken over our December events calendar after relentless, premature teasing from businesses. Get into the holiday spirit by visiting one of Los Angeles‘ finest gift stores or driving past one of the best Christmas light shows. Consider taking some alone time at one of these remote retreats if you’re at home this year and feeling a touch lonely. Our December events schedule has a tonne of events you can take advantage of, no matter what your plans are or how you’re feeling.

1. Home Alone in Concert

Reserve a seat for the next special Home Alone screening at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to kick up your Christmas movie marathon. The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the direction of David Newman, is bringing the cult film to life by performing John Williams’s score live to image in an immersive experience.

2. Enchanted: Forest of Light

The festive tradition at Descanso Gardens’ illuminated artworks will be filled with curiosity and surprise once more. The botanical garden’s annual evening event expertly combines interactive art pieces with eerie, glowing forests. All against a backdrop of lit-up trees and shimmering sound effects.

3. Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts

In this collection of Disney-inspired artworks. You can see how pieces of 18th-century French ornamental art influenced the inhabitants of the castle from Beauty. And the Beast and the magical woodland from Sleeping Beauty.

About 50 pieces of European art and design will be on show at the Huntington from December 10, 2022, to March 27, 2023. As part of the exhibition “Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts.” These ancient paintings will coexist with more modern, largely French-inspired production artworks from Disney theme parks and movies.

4. The Nutcracker with Dudamel: Tchaikovsky & Ellington

The music from The Nutcracker is incredibly memorable. Yet productions of the ballet frequently treat the score as an afterthought, typically playing a taped piece through speakers. However, Tchaikovsky’s composition receives the respect it merits at the Walt Disney Concert Hall—with a little modern flair. The LA Phil will perform pieces from The Nutcracker and Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington’s rollicking. Brassy arrangement of the score under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. It should be noted that this is a concert, not a stage production. So there won’t be any dressed-up mice or Christmas trees here. If you have young children, you might want to choose a shorter, family-friendly performance (Dec. 10, 17).

5. The Light We Carry Tour: In Conversation with Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama, a former first lady, will discuss her book The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times. She wrote, on a book tour that will visit six cities, including a stop in Los Angeles at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood.

6. Besame Mucho

This Latin music festival at Dodger Stadium is headlined by Caifanes, Café Tacvba, Juanes, Los Tigres Del Norte, Los Angeles Azules, and Sin Bandera.

7. Marina Del Rey Boat Parade

The Marina Del Rey Boat Parade will make you feel as though you’ve escaped to a sleepy fishing community. Bring a picnic and your friends and family to Fisherman’s Village or Burton Chace Park to watch as 70 boat race around the harbor decked out for the holidays. Best Theme, Best Animation, Best Band, Best Lights, and more are just a few of the categories. Fireworks kick off the celebrations at 5:55 p.m., and the boat procession begins at 6 p.m., rain or shine.

8. Cindy Sherman: 1977–1982

With more than 100 items on show, Hauser & Wirth delves deeply into the groundbreaking early work of photographer Cindy Sherman, including all 70 Untitled Film Stills, Rear Screen Projections, Centerfolds, and Color Studies.

9. Lightscape

The L.A. County Arboretum’s Lightscape holiday event replaced Moonlight Forest last year. It will now make a bigger comeback in 2022. Expect a mile-long pathway lined with illuminated trees and ten or so installations spaced out along the way.

10. Festival of Lights at the Mission Inn

During the annual Festival of Lights, Riverside’s breathtakingly magnificent Mission Inn is illuminated by 4.5 million sparkling lights. The day after Thanksgiving marks the start of the free six-week holiday tradition, which generally includes more than 400 animated characters.

11. CicLAvia: South L.A.

During the final event of the year from this bike-friendly, car-free festival, pedal your way across South L.A.

The name CicLAvia is derived from a similar Spanish word for “bike route,” and it has come to be used in Los Angeles to refer to the festival-like temporary shutting of the city’s roadways.

Bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, strollers, and pretty much anything else without an engine are welcome during the event, which was inspired by the first Ciclovas in Bogotá, Colombia, to ride a variety of car-free routes. Although there will certainly be a path through Downtown every year, previous events have brought it from the waterfront to the San Gabriel Valley.

CicLAvia will return in 2022 with four events: one in Downtown Los Angeles on October 9, one in South L.A. along Western Avenue on July 10, and one in each of the Hollywoods (West, East, and Plain) on August 21.

Along the way, there will likely be antics and general silliness, as well as music, street acts, and food trucks. Along the CicLAvia path, business owners frequently run promotions. Of course, you should ride a bike or use public transportation to get to your target location along the route.

12. Astra Lumina

The South Coast Botanic Garden has enjoyed hosting GLOW for the past two years. However, as the event grew bigger, we realized we wanted to offer audiences something extraordinary. Astra Lumina Los Angeles is here. Moment Factory’s breathtaking night walk series will be presented at the Garden in December thanks to a collaboration between Moment Factory and Fever.

Astra Lumina is an immersive night walk experience that employs projection, light, scenography, and original audio to evoke feelings in viewers and transport them into a surreal realm. The Garden prepares the audience for a spectacular occasion: a celeb visit. Stargazers are invited to go on this enchanted celestial trip via the Garden’s celestial walkway to experience the majesty of the stars and embrace their own personal light. These brilliant spheres regenerate, rise, and reconnect in the night sky as the night goes on, shining brighter than ever before.

13. Holiday Ice Rink Pershing Square

Ordinarily, Los Angeles doesn’t seem like much of a winter wonderland—that is, until you build an ice skating rink right among the Downtown skyscrapers. The outdoor holiday skating rink at Pershing Square is back after a nearly three-year absence. Come skate around and pretend there is snow on the ground. Admission includes skate rentals, but there is an additional fee for lockers and skating equipment.

14. Rooftop Cinema Club

For the second season of outdoor rooftop movie screenings in Downtown Los Angeles, the Arts District, and El Segundo, the masters of the genre have returned. Rooftop Cinema Club is your stylish, cosy, and less stressful alternative to other outdoor movie screenings. It is well known for its superb film selections and a consistent supply of snacks and alcohol. Rooftop Cinema Club will even provide you with a comfortable lawn chair; however, if you want the full camping experience, you’ll need to bring your own blanket. Additionally, you will receive a pair of wireless headphones so you won’t have to worry about missing a word while watching the movie over loudspeakers.

15. Billie Eilish

Although the sounds of an Invisalign being removed, horror movie music videos, and out-of-context Office samples may not seem like the makings of a pop juggernaut, Billie Eilish, a teenager from Los Angeles, is a free-spirited product of her generation.

16. Beastie Boys Exhibit at Beyond the Streets

Ladies, hello! You and all Angelenos who adore the enduring New York band are being called out by this new Beastie Boys display. This exhibition features personal belongings, artifacts, and memorabilia from Mike D, Ad-Rock, and the late MCA—the majority of which has never before been seen by the general public—at the Beyond the Streets flagship gallery on La Brea. A museum-like display is to be expected, complete with images covering the walls, enclosed tables holding tour swag and lyric sheets, and of course, some products in the gift shop. Free admission is available, but you must have a timed ticket to enter, so don’t ruin your chance to see it (from December 10 to January 23).
