Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year, brick-and-mortar retail pharmacies in the US will now be authorized to sell abortion drugs for the first time according to regulatory modifications issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday.

The FDA has approved the regulatory change that will allow certified pharmacies to dispense abortion drugs directly to patients after receiving a prescription from a doctor, according to Danco Laboratories, which distributes the drug mifepristone, which is used to end pregnancies within the first 10 weeks.

Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, mail-order internet pharmacies were the only ones with temporary authority to supply the pills, in addition to medical clinics.

“This adjustment is crucially important to improving access to medication abortion services at a time when people across the country are struggling to acquire abortion care services,” Danco said in a statement.

A request for comment from the FDA did not receive a prompt response.
