You’d be remiss not to celebrate Oktoberfest here in Los Angeles with all the beer Los Angeles has to offer, from craft breweries to Bavarian-style biergartens, but we’ve also rounded up bigger, rowdier events a little further away in Orange County and San Bernardino if you’d rather make a day trip out of it. Put on your lederhosen, practice your oompah dancing, and celebrate the arrival of fall with a bratwurst and a stein in each hand. Prost!

1. Oktoberfest at Fairplex

Every Friday and Saturday in October, the Fairplex, home of the Los Angeles County Fair, transforms into a German wonderland for Oktoberfest with Bavarian music, beer, and lots of chicken dance. At this 21+ event with DJs, oompah bands, and even a No Doubt cover band, sink your teeth into bratwurst, knockwurst, and sweet corn while knocking back genuine German beer. Returning guests should be aware that this year’s closing hour is 11 p.m.

2. Oktoberfest 2022 at Wurstküche Venice

This gastropub in Venice is hosting a Bavarian festival for three weekends beginning on Saturday, October 1, complete with live music, lederhosen, yodeling, and mouthwatering food. Choose from a variety of German and Belgian beers on draught, indulge in a flavorful rattlesnake and rabbit hot link topped with onions and peppers, and listen to live German music while yodeling. What’s best? Each admittance ticket costs $45 and includes a Wurstküche beer mug with the first fill included in the ticket fee (start timings are midday or 4 pm).

3. Wirtshaus

Bring your lederhosen to this Fairfax-area Biergarten on Fridays and Saturdays from September 17 to October 29 for a wide selection of German beers and authentic German food including pretzels, sausages, and Black Forest cake. On kickoff day, stop over at 3 pm to witness Wirtshaus’ keg-tapping ritual for a true spectacle. No matter what time of year you visit, though, Oktoberfest is celebrated here with live music, special culinary offerings, and even a complimentary stein if you purchase a liter of Weihenstephaner. At their two additional Biergarten sites, Rasselbock Mar Vista and Rasselbock Long Beach, they will also be celebrating Oktoberfest with stein-holding competitions.

4. Old World Oktoberfest Huntington Beach

The Old World Oktoberfest, which bills itself as “Orange County’s biggest celebration since 1977,” promises all the beers, brats, girls, and bands to transport you to Munich, but with better ocean views. Starting on September 18 and continuing through November 7, this reconstructed Bavarian village will have “Shot Girls,” dancers, oompah bands, and German bands every Wednesday to Sunday. Additionally, the renowned Old World wiener dog races will return for the September 18 launch event (with additional races on October 9, 16, and 23.) On Fridays and Saturdays, Old World’s Oktoberfest is 21+ with a cover charge ($10 and $15), however on other nights, families and partygoers of all ages are welcome (with free entry on Wednesday and Thursday).

5. Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest 2022

From September 10 to November 5 you may clink steins every Saturday and Sunday at the annual Oktoberfest at Big Bear Lake in the highlands (as well as Fridays in October). There will be plenty of beer flowing, brats sizzling, and dirndls in every hue of the rainbow. They’re offering both indoor and outdoor events, live oompah bands, including one flown in from Germany, as well as a full German cuisine menu with vegan alternatives, despite this year’s capacity restrictions.

7. San Gabriel Dumpling & Beer Fest

If German food isn’t your thing, this beer festival on Friday, October 14 at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse will serve boba and dumplings instead of brats and huge pretzels. While specific event information for the 2022 edition has not yet been made public (see the city’s Instagram for updates), previous $35 tickets included a beer tasting wristband that allowed attendees to sample an unlimited number of craft beers, as well as boba trucks and live entertainment.

8. Craftober Fest

Over 20 Southern California craft breweries will participate in this all-ages Oktoberfest-themed festival on the Rose Bowl field on Saturday, November 5, along with authentic Bavarian fares like pretzels and bratwurst. The five-ounce sample glass that comes with each ticket lets you enjoy unlimited pours of craft beer and kombucha for the duration of the afternoon.
