Pizza Hut began as a single restaurant in Wichita, Kansas, on June 15, 1958, by two brothers, Dan and Frank Carney, both Wichita State students. They launched a second location six months later, and within a year, they had six Pizza Hut locations. In 1959, the brothers started franchising. Chicago architect George Lindstrom created the signature Pizza Hut architectural style in 1963, and it was implemented in 1969.
Pizza Hut was purchased by PepsiCo in November 1977. On May 30, 1997, PepsiCo spun out Pizza Hut, along with Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken, and the three restaurant brands became part of a new business called Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc. On May 22, 2002, the company changed its name to Yum! Brands.
The oldest continually running Pizza Hut was in Manhattan, Kansas, near Kansas State University, in a shopping and bar district known as Aggieville. Lawrence Berberick and Gary Meyers launched the first Pizza Hut east of the Mississippi River in Athens, Ohio, in 1966.
The company launched a redesign on November 19, 2014, in an attempt to boost sales, which had been declining for the previous two years. The menu has been updated to include new crust flavors as well as 11 new specialty pizzas. Employees’ work outfits were also refreshed. Richtopia, a UK-based company, ranked Pizza Hut 24th on its list of the 200 Most Influential Brands in the World in 2017.
