Many flourish, indicating people’s enjoyment of large steak portions, towering fish platters, and filled baked potatoes.
In the city, there are undoubtedly many additional outstanding steakhouses (we’re looking at you, Chicago Cut, Prime & Provisions, and Chicago Chop House), but with only 14 options, these receive our highest recommendations and are listed alphabetically. 1. The Barn Steakhouse
Steakhouses In Chicago, Since Arnie Morton effectively invented the contemporary steakhouse with his franchise Morton’s, the Morton name is synonymous with meat. It is therefore not surprising that his daughter Amy, who is now a well-known restaurant, honored her father in 2016 when she launched the Barn in Evanston. The structure was constructed in 1883 but was abandoned for a century. This opulent, out-of-the-way meat palace has persisted in dazzling patrons just like its showpiece, a glistening light installation that hangs above the eating area. Eat heritage Angus cuts in red wine demi-glace, decadent crab spaghetti with white wine and shallots, or go old school with pan-seared calves liver with bacon in a red wine reduction while sitting below it or sneaking up to the mezzanine. Combine everything with a Martini or an Old Fashioned, just as they would in Arnie’s era.
2. Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf
Entering is like traveling back in time to France during the Belle Epoque. The scene is situated in a seductive low-lit area with a zinc-topped bar, red leather wrap-around booths, and soft chairs. Martinis and Old Fashioneds that are expertly poured, roasted bone marrow that melts on your lips, a variety of towers filled to the brim with iced crustaceans that cost up to $275, and 42-day dry-aged bone-in steaks that go great with warm king crab Oscar. This is the place to go if you want an aphrodisiac in a restaurant.
3. Bazaar Meat by Jose Andres
World-famous chef and philanthropist José Andrés teamed up with Gibsons Restaurant Group to launch this carnivorous festival overlooking the Chicago River after making an impact in Chicago with Jaleo. Visitors enter through the seafood-focused Bar Mar and proceed upstairs to a stunning dining area decorated with bright carpets and red chandeliers while passing cases containing maturing meats and Jamon Iberico. Considering that this is an Andres establishment, you must begin your meal with some tapas, such as the creative “Philly cheesesteak air bread” prepared with Kobe beef and cheddar cheese. The “taste across Japan” menu, which allows you to choose cuts of Kobe and Wagyu to be cooked tableside on an Ishigaki stone, is the pièce de résistance.
Steakhouses In Chicago, Who says the best steakhouses have to be extravagant or even in the middle of everything? This cozy 34-seat establishment, located on busy Western Avenue in West Town, is more of a trendy neighborhood brasserie that uses sustainably farmed products. For a decadent lunch of cheesesteaks, haus burgers, and of course oysters, arrive early. After you’ve had the 22-oz. dry-aged ribeye and perhaps a hiramasa Crudo to, you know, lighten things up, come later and start with the must-try short rib beignets. Since this is a local hangout, stay and have a drink at the bar.
Go back in time to the glitz of bygone Hollywood as you leave the commotion of the loud L tracks just above and beyond these doors. You’ll experience elegance throughout your meal with the glistening chandeliers, deep round leather seats, and towering fish and caviar service. Pick from a variety of cuts or go for surf and turf (go ahead, grab the grilled king crab leg) and add opulent extras like market-price black truffle to your meat. Even though the Windy City is outside, you might just as easily be on Sunset Boulevard at this location.
6. El Che Steakhouse & Bar
Steakhouses In Chicago, What began as a tribute to chef-owner John Manion’s passion for Argentinian grilling tradition evolved into a contemporary interpretation of a steakhouse with a casual, welcoming atmosphere. A large, open kitchen centered on a 12-foot fireplace with many grills and a wood-burning smoker, mimicking an Argentinian Asado, is provided instead of white tablecloths and stiff servers. Instead of going the whole hog and ordering the $115 parrillada with all the fun meats, such as sweetbreads, chorizo, sirloin cap, varied chimichurri, and more, go for the whole hog and get the a la carte menu instead. Add on even more because you also need the grilled lobster tail with diavola butter and the delicious empanadas.
7. Gene & Georgetti
Gene & Georgetti, Chicago’s oldest steakhouse, which has been open since 1941 and has served celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Russell Crowe, and Will Ferrell, will reopen in March with all the classics it has come to be known for over the last 80 years: rich and buttery shrimp de Jonghe, garlicky chicken Vesuvio, the exclusive Garbage Salad (iceberg, salami, mozzarella, Parmigiano cheese), signature kinds of pasta, and, It doesn’t get any better than this in terms of traditional Italian steakhouses in Chicago.
8. Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse
Steakhouses In Chicago, Few locations have the panache of Gibsons, which is celebrating its 30th year in 2019. Gibsons, one of the best restaurants in the nation, is an expert at serving and knowing how to prepare steaks. In fact, it is the first steakhouse in the country to have its own certified Angus beef program. Everything at Gibson’s seems to be enormous, including the 22-oz. W.R.’s Chicago Cut, the massive Australian lobster tail, the enormous double-baked potato, the loaded wedge salad slathered in blue cheese, and the mammoth crisp shrimp cocktail. Oh, and ask for six forks when ordering a “piece” of chocolate mousse pie or carrot cake because you will need to share it.
9. GT Prime Steakhouse
Chef Giuseppe Tentori received his Michelin stars from Boka (after working with renowned chef Charlie Trotter), but he first established his reputation with GT Fish & Oyster and its successor, the elegant and posh GT Prime, which was created by Karen Herold of Studio K. Herold furnished the wood-paneled space with plush fabrics, rounded leather booths, and a sparkling custom chandelier. The cuisine is much sexier: iridescent hiramasa Crudo with iced red chile vinaigrette; wonderfully marbled meat. Tagliatelle with black Umbrian truffles. Unable to choose a cut? Get the Carnivore for four 8-oz. pieces of fillet, prime NY strip, bison, and Westholme Wagyu from the Chef’s Select. This is the proper way to distribute food.
The enormous bi-level food court known as 88 Marketplace is located between Pilsen and Chinatown. And inside of that is Holu, one of Chicago’s newest and most creative steakhouses to open. Consider it a cross between typical steakhouse fare and Asian barbeque, but with the option to order USDA Prime, Australian or American Wagyu, or Japanese Kobe by the ounce. You can also select from seasonal specialties like fresh, live wild eels, Australian cold water giant lobsters, or wild jumbo tiger prawns, all of which you grill at the table. This is the ultimate steakhouse experience if there ever was one.
11. Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab
This Lettuce Entertain You-owned location, which is a branch of Miami’s Joe Stone Crab, one of the top-grossing restaurants in the nation, is regarded as the best steakhouse in the city. Upwards of 1.5 million pounds of sustainably caught chilled s tone crab flown in fresh from Florida and served with Joe’s mustard sauce have been cracked in this classic, as classics go, white tableclothed room under the watchful eye of the suited waitstaff. Master butchers slice tender bone-in trademark steaks, while servers delight with dishes like Dover sole and giant red king crab that are prepared at the table. This is a very sophisticated joint.
12. Maple & Ash
You’re not doing Maple & Ash right if you’re not throwing a party there. This flashy establishment is one of the liveliest and most popular in the nation. Promotes a wonderful night out even on a Tuesday. Chef Danny Grant prepares practically everything here over an open flame, including steaks, lamb, salmon, and branzino. Want to avoid making any decisions? Get the “I Don’t Give an F*@k” tasting menu for $200 per person. Whatever you eat, make sure to grab the hearth-fire-roasted seafood tower, which is finished with garlic butter and chile oil and includes oysters, scallops, lobster, clams, and more. Pro tip: Request the pasta add-on for the tower from your server, and get ready to have your mind blown. Believe us.
13. RPM Steak
You’re right to be suspicious of eateries that famous people open. However, Bill and Giuliana Rancic discovered success when they partnered with the Melman’s, who run Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. Following the phenomenal success of RPM Italian, RPM Steak debuted in 2014 and hasn’t slowed down since. It mixes the elegance of a classic steakhouse with the style of a cutting-edge eatery. No matter what you order, including the appetizer of coal-roasted Alaskan king crab with soy lime glaze, the dry-aged cheddar steakburger with horseradish on brioche, or some of the most expensive Japanese beef in the world, including the Hokkaido snow beef or 100% Tajima Kobe from Hyogo Prefecture, you might end up becoming a regular.
14. Swift & Sons
At this upscale steakhouse in Fulton Market. Designed by Avroko in homage to the meatpacking tycoons who ruled over Chicago, magic happens almost every night. The flawless service provided by a concierge as part of that magic will help you get whatever you want. Exceptional wine selections and top-notch drinks. Whether produced at the bar or on a cart that rolls around the dining area, are also included. Of course, this highlights pastry chef Leigh Omilinsky’s beautiful desserts as well as chef Chris Pandel’s selection of Prime steaks. As well as other dishes like the dry-aged Wagyu burger with truffled goat cheese, foraged mushroom risotto, and prized beef Wellington perfectly cooked inside a flaky puff pastry.
